Composition:
- Wild palmetto (Serenoa repens)
The lipophilic extract (45% of fatty acids and sterols) of the berries of Serenoa repens is used as adjuvant in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy in stages I and II and associated symptoms. Taken orally, it has shown obvious antiandrogenic effects, inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase (as the synthetic drug Finasteride), the cytosolic receptor of DHT and the cytosolic receptor of estrogen. The main efficacy of Serenoa repens extract is due to the inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase type I and type II, enzymes involved in the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is at the origin of the process of miniaturization of the hair follicle with shortening of the growth phase (anagen) and depigmentation of the stem and which can proceed until the complete disappearance of the hair itself.
- Linen (Lignans)
Present in the woody part of the plants, but also in the apple, in the cabbage and in numerous seeds. They have antioxidant, anticancer and antiestrogenic properties. They have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal activity. Lignans are present in large quantities in flax seeds. The use of flax seeds for hair problems has been discussed for some time. On the other hand, more recently there have been published studies that have identified in lignans that contain these effective active ingredients to combat the most common pathologies of the prostate. In particular, flax seeds are rich in diglycoside secoisolariciresinol (SDG) and secoisolariciresinol (in the form of aglycon), but also contain matairesinol and pinoresinol.
- Beta-sitosterol
Beta-sitosterol is a steroid, which is extracted from the wild palmetto (Serenoa repens) and Pygeum africanum (of which it is the main active, as well as the Hypoxis rooperi, another plant with anti-DHT properties), which turns out to have characteristics of Progenitor 17 substituted and also of weak estrogen (and antiestrogen). It has the capacity to absorb at the same time the 5 alpha-reductase (type I and type II) and the cytosolic receptors of the androgens to which dihydrotestosterone (which is at the origin of androgenetic alopecia) and the other androgens binds. In addition, it binds to the cellular membrane receptors of estrogen activating them, but acting at the same time as antiestrogen to prevent the union with the authentic estrogens. At the level of the hair follicle, this type of activation can, by activating the membrane adenyl cyclase, stimulate the mitosis of the matrix, contribute to the maintenance of the anagen phase and the optimization of the catagen phase.
- Greater nettle (Urtica dioica)
It has antiandrogenic action, as well as the extract of Serenoa repens, as well as having anti-seborrheic and anti-dandruff action. Its root contains heath, homovanilic alcohol, lignans, sitosterol derivatives and is used in the pathology of prostatic hypertrophy, limiting the dimensions of the prostate, perhaps because of the interaction between substances present in the nettle and the serum proteins that normally bind androgens .
- Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin has significant beneficial effects in the pathologies of the central nervous system and neurodegenerative diseases, in eye diseases, in joints, in cardiovascular diseases, in diabetes, in inflammatory states and in dysfunctions of the immune system. Some recent studies have shown an important activity of inhibition of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase by astaxanthin, which is useful in reducing the symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia and in combating prostate cancer. The same compound, according to these studies, seems to increase the effectiveness of the extract of wild palmetto in its anti-DHT activity and, consequently, its use in the trichological field against androgenetic alopecia is probably also useful.
- Zinc
Zinc inhibits the activity of 5-alpha-reductase up to 30% and is often used to reduce sebaceous secretion, is used in the healing processes of internal and external injuries (increases the speed of wound healing), in acne therapies and seborrheic dermatitis. Like the other anti-DHT active ingredients, its action is aimed at preventing the formation of dihydrotestosterone by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase.
- Silica (Silicon)
Some studies and the practical and widespread use of silica and organic silicon as a complement have shown in recent years the usefulness of this important mineral and its positive action for the strengthening of nails, hair, bone structure and health of the skin. Precisely silicon is the basis of the effectiveness of some phytotherapies such as the equiseto whose quality and activity has been related for some time to the percentage of silicon contained in the titled extracts. Some qualified studies have shown that silicon acts on the hair, significantly increasing the diameter of the stem after its supply for a few months.
- Copper
Copper in the human organism is a fundamental element for the activity of different enzymes such as ceruloplasmin, SOD (superoxide dismutase) and cytochrome C oxidase. In particular, these two enzymes are some of the main ones that oppose the oxidation processes triggered by free radicals. This mineral participates in the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells, facilitating the absorption of iron and the conversion of tyrosine into a dark element that pigments the skin and hair, participates in protein metabolism and promotes healing processes. In addition, copper favors the production of elastin by oxidation of vitamin C and is necessary for the production of connective tissue, bone and for the maintenance of the integrity of the vascular system. The ratio of copper to zinc has to be from 1 to 10 approximately, so it is advisable to supplement with copper when zinc-containing supplements are taken or when there is elevated zinquemia or much higher than the optimal ratio with cupremia.
